For composer update (recommended) you can follow steps specified in this stackexchange thread which are also given below.

chown -R user:group .
chmod u+x bin/magento
bin/magento cache:flush
bin/magento setup:upgrade
bin/magento setup:static-content:deploy
bin/magento indexer:reindex
  • Does upgrading from older to newer version affects Data Loss? We have to take backup before Upgrading? – Magento2 Devloper Oct 13 '16 at 11:59
  • Backup should be taken every time before doing upgrades etc. In my case there was no data loss and site is working normally as it should. – Devtype Oct 13 '16 at 12:11
