Feb 1, 2013 at 20:49 comment added Ben Lessani @Jurgen - For all our servers - Nginx/Apache/PHP always runs as the same user as SSH/FTP - be it on shared/dedicated hosting. So permissions can be rwx for owner only - as the group and everyone else isn't relevant. But as I mentioned - not everyone configures their server properly (in fact, very, very few do) - and there is potential for the Apache/Nginx/PHP user to differ from that of the SSH/FTP user - so adding each other to each respective group then allows for each to rwx files as they should be able to.
Feb 1, 2013 at 19:43 comment added Jürgen Thelen Shouldn't this be 755 and 644 permissions? Or do you have any special reason to recommend 775 and 664?

More users should be doing it to help this beta evolve, not slating other members for making an effort to help others and progress the site?
Feb 1, 2013 at 5:32 comment added Matthias Zeis I think that the answer may be helpful for some Magento users but it should be marked as a community-wiki-like Q&A question as the poster answered the question himself immediately.
