Depending on the number of products, this needs some performance optimization. Star with omittting ->addAttributeToSelect('*');, you don't need to load all the product attributes.

Best from the command line, change to shell folder and run php update_categories.php so that things get updated and you can see error messages. Plus you don't want this to be run by anyone, or do you?
