It will by default if the indexing is stock indexer is set to auto: github.com/OpenMage/magento-mirror/blob/magento-1.9/app/code/… note the method: afterCommitCallback below as well.

Note, you'll want to add a check for is_in_stock to update products that come in and out of stock.
