When child product visibility is set to 'Not visible individually' don't redirect to 404
This is not an answer to your question, but it may be a solution to your problem.
If you want the simple products to be accessible, you can just set their visibility to Catalog and don't assign them ...

sudo nano /etc/php/7.3/apache2/php.ini
and change
max_execution_time = 18000
max_input_time = 1800
memory_limit = 1024M
