Lets say, I have coded an extension, that is hosted on github. You can install it via composer and composer adds a new require(ment) to the main composer.json. For example:

"require": {
        "myvendor/my-module": "^0.9"
}

Now, whenever I release an update with a tag smaller than 1.0, the composer update command installs the new version.

But what happens, when I release version 1.0?

Basically, my main question is: Is there any way, to inform the users of the extension via composer, that a major update was released?

Or are they stuck on 0.9 until they edit their composer.json by manually?
