I once configured braintree for testing purposes. After that it kept bugging me with a javascript error in the shopping cart area.

So I disabled the module entirely with bin/magento module:disable Magento_Braintree.

After that my checkout broke entirely with the error Payment model name is not provided in config!. I debugged and found that \Magento\Payment\Model\PaymentMethodList::getList still returns braintree methods as one of the payment methods:

Array
(
    [0] => free
    [1] => substitution
    [2] => vault
    [3] => amazon_payment
    [4] => amazonlogin
    [5] => paypalpluscw_paypal
    [6] => paypalpluscw_paypalplus
    [7] => checkmo
    [8] => purchaseorder
    [9] => banktransfer
    [10] => cashondelivery
    [11] => paypal_express
    [12] => paypal_express_bml
    [13] => payflow_express
    [14] => payflow_express_bml
    [15] => payflowpro
    [16] => payflowpro_cc_vault
    [17] => paypal_billing_agreement
    [18] => payflow_link
    [19] => payflow_advanced
    [20] => hosted_pro
    [21] => m2epropayment
    [22] => braintree
    [23] => braintree_paypal
    [24] => aw_sarp_braintree_recurring
    [25] => aw_sarp_braintree_paypal_recurring
)

I have cleaned the database from any remnants that contain the string "braintree". I also removed all the braintree settings in the core_config_data table. Still the error persists.

I cleaned all caches, compiled di and so on... nothing helps.

Where does the list of payment methods come from if not from the database?
