EDIT: I had this question originally posted on Stackoverflow that never got fully answered, I'm posting in here in hopes to shed anymore light on why the massive table scans and any means to prevent such with (hopefully) minimal core changes.


Magento Enterprise. 1.10.1.1. The data set of customers and addresses are semi-large (125k+) CSRs are often on this grid (sometimes 25+ concurrent users at a time).

Here is the code snippet were the collection is being generated in the Customer Grid.php Block file. Nothing fancy or out of ordinary, simply adding attributes to the collection mainly.

So the question is how can I get this query to perform better and not cause the temporary tables being created and scanned.

I'm not exactly sure what I can index to improve this queries performance, and I don't want to dig too much into modifying Magento's ORM.

The answer to your plight does not lie in the customizations, those are just fine. The problematic portion of the query is the ORDER BY and will only rear it's ugly head when the grid has been sorted by the Name column in the admin:

This ORDER BY clause is needed to sort by the Name column because the Name column is a concatenation of the prefix, first, middle and last name of the customer. To combine the information and use it for ordering, a tmp table has to be used since the data being concatenated together is originating from the JOINs on the query. This is how the Magento core handles this sort, because it's merely applying the same code used in the WHERE clause to apply the sorts.

Wrapping the entire query as a sub-select would cut down the query time a bit, as it would not be using a temp table any more, but it would still be using filesort.

So there are two "solutions" that I can see here:

  1. Create a full_name attribute on the customer entity which is populated on save. This pre-populated full_name attribute could then be used on the grid without any form of concatenation and would cut out the need for both the temp tables and the filesort.

  2. Simply not sort by the Name column when time is an issue. This obviously won't help if you need to sort by Name, but something to keep in mind until you have the chance to build out the changes in #1 above. :)
