While installing Magento 2.3, I am facing below error.

Fatal error: Uncaught Magento\Framework\Exception\FileSystemException: Directory "/var/www/html/M23/var/cache/" cannot be created Warning!mkdir(): Permission denied in /var/www/html/M23/vendor/magento/framework/Filesystem/Driver/File.php

I have given permission 770 for directory and 660 for file type, As well as trying 775 and 664 for directory and file respectively.

Finally trying 777 for var folder but No Luck, still facing the same issue, Deleted var/cache/*, var/di/* , var/generation/* var/page_cache/* var/view_preprocessed/*

Have I missed something?

Can you please let me know the correct file and folder permission.

  • Permissions problems normally result in a wrong configuration of user/group owner... For instance 770 won't work if webserver user & console user don't belong to same groups

Main difference here would be operating system where you run the application

Most solid approach would be setting the permissions for two users (as this is the most common configuration for the site when published in a web hosting) and working local in a Unix system (as this is by far most common operating system for a server)

Then, apply commands in Set ownership and permissions for two users section https://devdocs.magento.com/guides/v2.3/install-gde/prereq/file-system-perms.html

If you follow all steps you should have no problem

In addition to that, another thing to do is adding your webserver user (www-data, if you use Apache) to your console user group (normally, your username when you log in your system). This guarantees any bin/magento command would have same file/folder access as any web request
